Wow, it has been long ... I don't think i can update regularly anymore since i've landed my self a job ... time & travelling is no longer a luxury i could afford and I wonder where my life will go after this ?

The train left Yogya’s Tugu Train Station on the dot at 8pm and reached Jakarta around 5.30 in the morning, almost two hours late. The sun was yet to be seen but it was obvious the city had its eyes wide open way prior to our arrival. Since we have tons of time to spare, we decided to take a stroll for a while in the ‘Tugu Monumen Nasional’ which is situated right next to Gambir. It was the only place we visited in Jakarta apart from the airport.

I must admit that I was surprised to see Jakartans coming to the park in droves, in the wee hours of the morning and their numbers swelled after only a few minutes. I never knew that Jakartans were so health conscious. After ‘tawaf’-ing the monument once, it was time for us to get to the airport.

We arrived at the airport around 7am, and our departure wasn’t until 1.10pm. The hours at the airport were agonizing and painstakingly slow. We sprawled on benches and ambled between terminals to burn time that doesn’t seem to be getting any faster. When the time came for us to depart, the flight was retimed twice before taking-off at about 3.30pm.

Well, that is me trying ‘Lesehan’ which is a traditional style of dining cross-legged on straw mats. I ate ‘Nasi Gudek’ that night, influenced maybe by the rave reviews that I got from guidebooks, family and friends. In my defense I must say that I tried really hard to stomach it, really hard. Looking at the food I don’t see anything that’s worth the hype, it looks as if it came out from a crime scene from a CSI episode. I know that we shouldn’t talk about food that way, but I’m just concerned that people would order something that they wouldn’t eat. It would be a waste of precious rice. Unless you know that ‘Fear Is Not a Factor’ for you, then go ahead and be my guest. As for me and my brother, we turn to western gastronomy for comfort whenever we’re famished. The American embassy with the golden arches seems to be the natural choice–McD-. Complete with the trappings of your regular airport security system, you need to go through metal detectors just to get your hands on a couple of Double-Chees Burgers and a box of McNuggets. There's always a fist time for everything right

After spending several hours in Tamansari, next stop was the ‘Pasar Burung Ngasem’. Bird fanciers flock here to buy anything from a slimy creepy-crawly down to birds. The place is colorful and an interesting place to dwell. Looking at the price tags, I’m pretty sure they are reasonably priced, unfortunately there’s no room for them to fit into our budget, and also into our backpacks for that matter. We were lucky enough not to contract any diseases especially in a time when avian flu is rampant. After a long day of overexerting our somewhat muscular legs, heheh, we were knackered and waddled back to our hotel for a little siesta.

Day two was less adventurous, on television the news of Merapi getting more and more agitated, hangs in the air as if to mock us, the vibrations recorded the day before had rocketed from 70 to 120. The status was still ‘siaga’. But this time it transpired that the magnitude of the situation was much more serious than previously thought, the authorities were prepared to evacuate those living under the shadow of Merapi at a moments notice. Trucks were on standby to evacuate the citizens. Adding insult to injury, I opened my bag only to find out everything was wet, not damp but wet from the trip the day before. Our guide book, our extra clothes and passports all wet. The map we printed was virtually destroyed and rendered useless. Thankfully our electronic gadgets didn’t suffer the same fate as I was smart enough to wrap them in plastic bags.
